Community Health System Strengthening in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Ribbon

International SOS has extensive experience in primary and community health systems. This includes immunisation and Malaria control programs in the duty of care of partners’ employees and their communities.

This event took place in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Katanga region between 2007 and 2018. International SOS provided technical guidance for a 2008 health baseline study and design of the CHAP (Community Health Action Plan). We worked with the Ministry of Health and Non-Profit partners to revitalise the Health Zone through effective long-term planning. We also improved coverage and quality of care across health zones, and enhanced community participation.

Activites included supporting procurement and training, establishing the financial system and providing on-going supervision. The included a targeted ‘Mother and Child Outreach Program’ as well as innovative mobile clinic deployment.

Our integrated malaria control programme achieved a 74% reduction in malaria rates in the targeted population since 2008. This was despite a significant migration in-and-out of the project area.

Between 2008 and 2018 we also supported the Cholera reduction in the region. Thus, we created and supplied over 5,000 health education materials. We also conducted Community Awareness training using different media.

More than 250,000 polio vaccinations were administered to children and pregnant women. 90% of under 1 year old were fully vaccinated, as per the WHO guidelines.
